Ludwig Auerbach wrote the famous Black Forest song “O Schwarzwald, o Heimat, wie bist du so schön!” in Seelbach in which he describes his love and affection for his native Black Forest.
The poet was born in Pforzheim on 5 September 1840. At the age of 16 he had already penned his first work: the romantic poem Belrem von Weißenstein. In 1877, Ludwig Auerbach moved with his family firstly to Lahr and then to Seelbach. He died at the early age of 42 on 22 July 1882. The Black Forest poet is buried in the main cemetery in Pforzheim. The memory of the poet is kept alive in Seelbach by a memorial stone and a room– the Ludwig-Auerbach-Stube – named after him in the community centre.
