The Abbey Himmerod was founded by Bernard of Clairvaux and was run by Cistercian monks until October 2017. Although the convent has been dissolved, Himmerod still presents itself as a place of inner reflection today. There is something special in the air here. Let your gaze be captivated by the impressive monastery church, built in the Baroque style in 1751, which exudes an almost magical atmosphere. The small Chapel of Grace is a place of refuge for many who face worries and difficulties and seek support in everyday life.
The monastery's shops invite you to browse and discover. In the small art and bookshop, you will find, in addition to theological literature focused on tranquility and inner reflection, works by the Himmerod monks as well as products made specially in the abbey, such as abbey beer, monastery liqueur, mustard, and honey.
The monastery garden opens every year on March 1 and offers a wide range of young vegetable plants, perennials, herbs, and bedding plants. The monastery fishery is also worth a small detour. Fish had a fixed place on the Cistercian menu, so fish farming in Himmerod has a centuries-old tradition.
The “Old Mill” museum is located in the oldest building of the abbey. It houses an enamel collection and a bronze collection. Regular temporary exhibitions take place on the ground floor of the “Old Mill”.
