The former main guardhouse of the Austrian garrison was built in 1733 by master carpenter Johann Martin Vonderlew. After 1830 the guardhouse was used for civilian puposes: between 1879 and 1883 the polyclinic was located here, then until 1888 the upper floor was used by the Freiburg art association. Today the “Alte Wache” hosts the “Haus der Badischen Weine” (house of wines from Baden).
