The **Baden Ständehaus** in Karlsruhe is rightly regarded as a pioneer of democracy in Germany. Since 1993, the "Erinnerungsstätte Ständehaus" (Ständehaus Memorial) has commemorated this tradition with an exhibition presenting the history of the Baden state parliament.
In **1822**, the **Ständehaus** was built in Karlsruhe, the first parliamentary building in Germany created for this purpose. Until 1918, it housed the Baden Assembly of Estates, and from 1919 to 1933, the state parliament of the Republic of Baden. The building was designed by **Friedrich Weinbrenner** and **Friedrich Arnold**. The interior was dominated by the chamber of the Second Chamber, the people's representation. It was surrounded by a balcony from which interested parties could follow the sessions.
The building was severely damaged during World War II and has been replaced by the New House of Representatives, which now houses the city library. The "House of Representatives Memorial," an exhibition on the parliamentary and democratic history of Baden, extends from the ground floor to the second basement level around the staircase. Among other things, visitors can see a model of the Ständehaus, which allows a view into the meeting room of the Second Chamber, and the contents of the Ständehaus foundation stone from 1820, including a bottle of wine.
