Churches and abbeys
Sudende 37, 26899 Rhede (Ems)
A late Gothic church was built over the rest of this predecessor building. The upper storey of the tower is dated 1470. The three cross vaults inside the church are decorated with Gothic vine paintings and a depiction of Christ from around 1511.
Two statues of the two church saints St. Margaret and St. Vitus from the 18th century stand in the church from a rococo altar from St. Vitus in Meppen, which was installed in the church in the 1960s. Two other smaller statues of St. Anthony of Padua and St. Joseph from the end of the 17th century are of unknown origin.
The secularized late Gothic Old Rheder Church has been the Emsland district's "memorial church" for the "victims of the world wars and National Socialist tyranny" since 1991. In addition to commemorative events, concerts are held, including on the 18th century Italian organ.
