Imagine there is a big book of rules. This book applies to everyone in Germany. The book is called the Basic Law. The Basic Law is very important. It helps us to live together harmoniously. It ensures that everyone is treated fairly.
The Basic Law has been in place for over 50 years. The Basic Law contains many important rules. These rules protect the rights of everyone. It doesn’t matter what someone looks like, what language they speak or what they believe in. Everyone is equal. No one should be treated worse than anyone else.
The Basic Law also says: Everyone has the right to say what they think. This is called freedom of expression. You are allowed to express your opinion. But you mustn’t insult or hurt anyone. Newspapers, television and the internet are free to report the news. This is called freedom of the press.
The Basic Law also sets out how the government works. There is the Bundestag. The Bundestag makes the laws. There is the Federal Government. It runs the country. No one is allowed to make decisions on their own. This is called the separation of powers. That way, no one has too much power.
You notice the Basic Law in everyday life. For example: you are allowed to express your opinion at school. Your family may have a different faith to your friends. Everyone is allowed to join a sports club, no matter where they come from. The Basic Law protects you if you need help. The Basic Law is like an invisible shield for everyone in Germany. It helps us to live in freedom and peace. It is important to know and respect the Basic Law. In this way, we work together to ensure that everyone is well.
The Basic Law plays an important role in Herrenberg too. A special place for this is the town hall. This is where the mayor works. Many members of the town council also have their offices there. Important decisions for the town are prepared and implemented at the town hall. In doing so, everyone must abide by the Basic Law. For example, everyone should be treated fairly. Everyone should be allowed to express their opinion and receive help when needed. The Town Hall demonstrates that the Basic Law protects people and helps ensure that life in Herrenberg remains fair and peaceful.
