The Hanseatic city of Stade is best known for its historic harbour. In the immediate vicinity, half-timbered houses up to 500 years old dominate the streetscape. A pedal boat illustrates how ships were loaded in the old days. Visitors can learn more about the history of Stade at the Schwedenspeicher Museum. Grauerort Fortress, built in the 19th century, towers further north. It was used for coastal defence in the 19th century.
