Höwenegg is one of the Hegau volcanoes. The surface lake is not a crater lake, but was formed by large-scale basalt mining. ᐧ The Höwenegg is an official geopoint of the **[UNESCO Global Geopark Schwäbische Alb](https://www.geopark-alb.de/geopark-erleben/reise-in-die-erdgeschichte/)**. About 7 to 12 million years ago, the Hegau region was characterized by intense volcanic activity. The Wartenberg near Geisingen and the Höwenegg near Immendingen are also part of the Hegau volcanoes. They are the northernmost of the Hegau volcanoes. From 1900 to 1979, volcanic basalt rock was quarried on the Höwenegg (for paving stones, floor slabs, and road construction). Geothermal energy also plays a central role for the TuWass thermal and leisure pool in Tuttlingen. During targeted drilling in 1998, the (hoped-for) mineral thermal water was discovered at a depth of about 642 meters. At approximately 48° Celsius, the temperature was significantly higher than expected. Experts suspect a connection to Hegau volcanism.
