The Josefshaus

Basler Straße 1, 79189 Bad Krozingen

General information

The Josefshaus, which was built in the 17th Century, has over the course of the centuries been used for many different functions and purposes. It was used both as a tavern and a girls’ school before it was used from 1890 until its closure in 1983 as a poor house and hospital. The rooms were subsequently used by the community cinema (until February 2015) and by the office of the local land registry (until March 2016). Today the headquarters of the Community college for the southern Breisgau region are based in the building. In addition, the Josefshaus hosts a series of chamber music concerts “Piano and More” as well as meetings of the municipality council (in the council room).

Originally forming part of the property of the nearby palace, and because of its striking crow-stepped roof, the house represents a kind of historical document of the traditional type of construction in the area, especially that around the Basler Strasse.
