Ilmenau's most famous sights include the Kickelhahn and the Goethehäuschen. A viewing tower sits enthroned on the local mountain, which is over 800 metres high and offers views as far as Weimar in good weather. Visitors can also follow in the footsteps of the famous poet prince Goethe. The wall of a hunting lodge on which he wrote verses from his "Wanderers' Night Song" in 1780 has been known as Goethe's cottage ever since.
