Welcome to Kloster Lamspringe

The foundation of the Benedictine convent dates back to the foundation of the Saxon Count Ricdag in 847. The convent developed into an important spiritual institution. The Reformation in 1568 led to its transformation into a Protestant convent of the Duchy of Brunswick, which existed until it was returned to the diocese of Hildesheim in 1629. In 1643, English Benedictines revived the monastery. By 1691, they had created the present-day church in the Westphalian post-Gothic style with its rich Baroque interior and the abbey. The newly founded monastery quickly flourished and was the only English monastery on German soil until it was dissolved in 1803. The church is a three-aisled hall church with four vaulted bays, supported by six eight-sided pillars and wall brackets. Seven baroque altars have adorned the church for more than 300 years. Tip: Plan a walk in the monastery park during your visit.
