Lammplatz, 79189 Bad Krozingen
In 1807 the municipality of Krozingen was granted permission to hold an annual market on a square to the West of the busy main road to Basel (Basler Landstrasse). The Lammplatz was named after the Lam Guest House, which is currently situated at the connecting road to the Basler Strasse. The central importance of the square to the town was underlined in 1984 when a pedestrian zone was opened there.
For many years now a weekly market has been held on the Lammplatz in Bad Krozingen. Various stallholders present their wares here at different times throughout the year. Some are there throughout the year and others just on a seasonal basis.
On the southern side of the Lammplatz stands a majestic, almost square-shaped building with a large hipped roof, which today houses a branch of the Volksbank. The thick walls and small windows give the building an almost defiant character. From the outside you can see that the building was completed in three phases of construction.
The oldest part of the building is the wall which projects out to the North and whose square blocks of bossed stone indicate that it is of great age.
The earlier main entrance, today covered by a modern glass corridor, on the South side and turning away from the square, is Late Gothic. As indicated by the date above this Late Gothic doorway, the building underwent a further and final renovation in 1722. The decorations around the entrance area and the designs in the stonework indicate that this was the residence of a family which belonged to the nobility. In fact this was always the seat of the local lords of Krozingen.
Pfirt’sche’s Little Palace (Pfirt’sches Schlösschen) was named after the Lords of Pfirt who were the local lords from 1660 until 1896. The building was privatised in the 19th Century and was operated as the Palace’s café for many years. In 1988 the Volksbank acquired the building and undertook a complete renovation of it.
