Horst Janssen (1929-1995) was an important draughtsman, etcher, lithographer, woodcut artist, author, poster artist and illustrator. He spent his youth in Oldenburg. His extraordinary talent as a draughtsman was already revealed during his school years. Janssen's artistic career began as a master student of Alfred Mahlau in Hamburg. His works have been exhibited all over the world, from New York to Tokyo. In 1992, the city of Oldenburg bestowed honorary citizenship on the artist, who was regarded as eccentric. In 2000, it set up a memorial to him and his work with its own museum.
Permanent exhibition on life and work
The Horst Janssen Museum shows numerous works by the world-famous graphic artist, draughtsman and lithographer in its permanent exhibition. In four thematic areas, visitors and viewers can get to know Horst-Janssen, his work and his techniques. Special emphasis is placed on the practical teaching of Janssen's techniques. At various stations, guests can actively take up pencil and paper themselves, for example, or follow the procedure of various printing techniques.
In addition, the works of (supra-)regional and international artists from the past and present are exhibited in changing special shows.
