The inhabitants of East Frisia still commemorate their special status in the Middle Ages under the slogan "Frisian Freedom". At that time, the Frisians were not subject to the strict feudal order, but had their own laws. At the former meeting place of the Frisian communities, you can admire the Upstalsboom monument: a stone pyramid made of fieldstones that was built in the 19th century.
