The castle in particular, situated on an island, bears witness to Schwerin's former role as a royal seat. Thanks to its romantically decorated façade and extensive castle park, this building is also known as the "Neuschwanstein of the north". Schwerin is also home to the tallest church tower in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The old town centre is home to the so-called "Kommodenhäuschen", a half-timbered house that is over 300 years old.
