UNESCO-Welterbe FAGUS-WERK in Alfeld

Welcome to UNESCO-Welterbe FAGUS-WERK in Alfeld

Light, air and clarity - these features were to characterise the Fagus factory built in 1911. You will see that the plan has been well implemented - in Alfeld (Leine), a town of 18,500 inhabitants about 35 kilometres southwest of Hildesheim, you can experience the fascinating original building of modern industrial architecture today. Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus, created a building of almost weightless elegance with his glass and steel construction, which was unusual for factories at that time. The plant was registered as a listed building in 1946 and has been in continuous operation ever since, producing products such as shoe lasts or measuring and fire protection systems. In the interactive UNESCO visitor centre, you can find out why the plant has been one of Germany's World Heritage Sites since 2011. You will also find a Fagus-Gropius exhibition on the company's history and architecture and gain insights into the model cellar. A video guide accompanies visitors on the outdoor grounds, and later you can enjoy culinary delights in the café and on the UNESCO terrace - the day trip from Hildesheim is well worth it!
