A natural phenomenon unique in the world is the Danube sinkhole in the Danube Highlands: the Danube flows into two seas. There are several sink points here. A large part of the Danube water disappears into the ground at several places. The first major main sink point of the Danube in the area of the Danube sinkhole is located in Immendingen in the Danube Highlands, directly at the weir near the covered wooden bridge and close to the so-called Danube Riverside Park II. At this first main sink point, depending on the water level, individual larger swallow holes can be seen. At times, up to 8 cubic meters of Danube water per second disappear into the ground here in the riverbed of the Danube. Something truly extraordinary is happening in the Danube Highlands, something unique in the world: between Immendingen and Fridingen, the Danube splits in two: part of the Danube water sinks into the ground, while the other part — usually — continues to flow above ground. This means that the Danube flows into two seas — the Black Sea and at the same time the North Sea! In the summer months, it often disappears completely. At most, some Danube water then still gets past the Danube sinkhole through the two diversion tunnels near Immendingen and Fridingen, depending on the water level. Sometimes none at all. Then Vienna, so to speak, is actually no longer on the Danube — but on the Krähenbach from the Möhringen district of Tuttlingen, the first tributary after the first complete sink point! The Danube sinkhole is an official geopoint of the UNESCO Global Geopark Swabian Alb.
