Among the most important secular buildings of the city is certainly the Basler yard that today occupies the entire block between Kaiserstrasse, Engelstrasse, Münsterplatz and Marktgasse. The core building is the Stadtpalais of Konrad Stürtzel von Buchheim, chancellor of Maximiliam I, which he allowed to be erected instead of four older houses in the end of 15th century. On the façade of Kaiserstrasse, the original four houses can still be gleaned.
In 1944, the Basler Yard was seriously affected. The interior was burned out completely. Under President Leo Wohleb, it was rebuilt in 1950-51 and it initially served as a home office of the State of South Baden (Südbaden). On 1st October 1952, the first provincial government moved in the Basler Yard.
