Marktplatz, 35510 Butzbach
The Butzbach Market Square has been the centre of urban life since the city foundation in 1321, close to the much older town, which was first documented in 773 as the village called “at the brook of bodo”. The market square with its’market fountain, the city municipal building (1559/60) as well as numerous remarkable half timbered houses, is one of the most beautiful and well known squares in Hesse (redesigned in 1986/87). The market fountain (first mentioned in 1395) had running water (contrary to other fountains in the city). Several of the houses surrounding the square are even older than the municipal building (e.g. Marktplatz No.18, which in parts dates back to the 14th century).
