Town hall

Marktpl. 4, 71263 Weil der Stadt

Weil der Stadt's town hall is estimated to have been built in 1582, but fell victim to the devastating town fire almost half a century later and was destroyed by the flames. The Renaissance building was rebuilt a short time later in 1669, retaining its historical features.

The round-arched arches of the town hall - today also known as "arcades" - once housed the Metzel and Bortlauben, reminding us of the town's importance as a market and trading center.

Two coats of arms adorn the façades of the town hall: the imperial coat of arms is proudly displayed on the west side. The south façade, on the other hand, bears the city coat of arms with the imperial eagle, the key of St. Peter and the inscription S.P.Q.R. (Senatus Populusque Romanus: "Senate and People of Rome") as a symbol of the historical connection to the Holy Roman Empire of German Nations.
