Kölner Tor, 57075 Siegen
The town was surrounded by walls erected in the 13th century and which featured crenels, 18 towers and three main gates named Marburg, Cologne (Köln) and Wetzlar Gates. The name of the latter gate was changed in the early 17th century to “Tannergate” (“Löhrtor”) after the tanners who were based nearby. The city walls never had to withstand a siege. In the course of the 19th century, the three main gates as well as extensive sections of the walls were pulled down. What remains are the stumps of three towers in the Hinterstraße as well as fragments of the wall in the Hainstraße and on the parking lot of the district hospital (Kreiskrankenhaus). Some particularly high wall remnants can be seen in the Obergraben and Kölner Tor streets. At the junction of Lohgraben and Löhrstraße, remnants of the Löhrtor foundation are still visible.
