Since 1701 Thomas Fischer not only ran an inn but a “Fuhrhalterei” (a carriage service company) as well.
His successor, Johann Michael Kemling, succeeded in establishing a flourishing carriage stop in town. With increasing mobility and traffic from travel the inn developed into a station and resting place for travellers. In the middle of the 18th century Georg Friedrich Sitzler turned it into a still well renowned institution for travellers. Not only could one find shelter here for the night or a rest, but the service offered included small repairs, change of wooden tires and resting places for the carriages horses.
The charm of a three hundred year tradition of keeping an inn is still alive today. A specialty: the double flight of stairs on the front of the inn served as an entrance for locals and visitors to the inn only.
The cuddly rooms with low ceilings and fire places from the 17th century saw often raw and hearty action in front of the fire places.
The driver’s room, back then reserved for the personnel of the carriages only, could still be in use today. Sitting elevated at the tables one could still watch over the carriage horses if there were some today.
The adjoining champagne room, which was deliberately reserved for travellers, still has its original baroque charm from the world of the 18th century.
