Historic Kursaal (big hall) Sigel

In 1842 the merchant Franz Peter Sigel from Heidelberg bought the property of the now clinic. Quickly following up were the bathhouse, outbuilding, drinking and hiking hall, as well as a music pavilion. As crowning glory Sigel commissioned one of the students of the famous architect Weinbrenner from Karlsruhe to design and construct the “Kursaal” building and the flight of stairs leading up to it.

Posidonienschieferwand (Posidonia Shale Wall)

In the Zeuterner street, approximately 10 minutes by foot from your location, you will find the “Posidonienschieferwand” (Posidonia Shell Wall).

The former slate quarry was used to mine oil rich slate and slate for cement production. After cessation of operations in the quarry in 1900 the quarry laid bare. In 1975 the community re-cultivated the site and it was put under the federal act for the protection of nature. This slate wall is the only one of its kind in the upper Rhine rift that offers insight into the black Jura- or Posidonia Slate formed 190 million years ago in Jura.
