Zum Roten Bären

Oberlinden 12, 79098 Freiburg

General information:

The "Roten Bären" is not only known as the oldest inn in Germany, its walls are also the oldest inventory of the city of Freiburg. The foundations date back to the time before the city was founded in 1120.

In 1744, the French blew up the fortifications during their withdrawal from Freiburg. It is very probable that the "Bären" - very close to the city walls - were also affected. The hitherto Romanesque-Gothic arcades’ house was demolished for the most part and the present baroque building erected.

In 1957, the state-owned three-storey baroque building of the "Roten Bären" obtained façade painting in red and grey tones with figurative representations, coat of arms and an inscription on the history of the house. The driveway breaks through the city wall that still exists in its height between the main and rear building.
