Overview

A bridge pathway over the main gate leads to the powerful bastion. The cannons exhibited here were pointed southwards towards the Hornwald forest, the high position of which gave attackers a real advantage.

Fortunately, military strategies are no longer important these days. You can simply enjoy the wonderful view across Breisgau Bight, the Belfort Gap and far into Alsace, all the way to the Vosges, and the Kaiserstuhl mountains. If you turn to the north, you have an impressive overview over the Hochburg complex, the high castle, the governor’s residence, the autumn house and the eastern façade of the high castle.

If you look down into the coach house yard, you can see the two bastion corner towers and the vaulted coach house. This is also the location of the Hochburg Society’s construction site. Even after 50 years, constant maintenance and upkeep is required.
