On August 15, 1901, the "Municipal Public Library and People's Reading Room" was opened in a central location on Cathedral Square (Münsterplatz) 25 in a former check-inn pub that had been used as an orphanage for a long time. It replaced the Public Library with books hall, which had been launched in 1893 by the German society for ethical culture.
As much of the old town, the library was destroyed during air raids in November 1944. Until 1962, the facility was therefore provisionally housed in other buildings. Mid-1950s, the plans for the reconstruction on the Cathedral Square were advanced. The first phase - the main youth library - was opened in 1959. In 1963, the reopening of the entire library followed.
