Today's "Old University" is the college built by the Jesuits over decades. From 1620, the Jesuits settled in Freiburg and took over the grammar school affiliated to the University, all departments of philosophy and some of the Faculty of Theology.
In 1773, at the insistence of several States, the Pope dissolved the Jesuit order (temporarily) so their colleagues in the Bertholdstrasse came into the possession of the University. Until 1911, the building complex was the main building of the University of Freiburg. During World War II, the building was almost completely destroyed but rebuilt again until 1957.
The "Old University" hosts the "Uniseum". Visitors can learn more about the history of the university, buy souvenirs or just enjoy the view of the historic courtyard.
