St.-Michael-Straße 14, 79189 Bad Krozingen-Tunsel
In a landscape which is dominated by Baroque churches, the church of St Michael in Tunsel, built between 1851 - 57, presents a completely different perspective. Externally the church shows a similar construction to that typical of the first half of the 19th Century, the interior, however, displays an extremely high quality of painting as well as a high altar dating from the 1890s which was created by the artist Karl Schilling. It is a tribute to the priest Dr Theodor Kurrus that the interior paintings were preserved in the 1960s, at a time when the artistic works of the late 19th Century were being radically removed in other churches. Saint Michael did not become the patron saint of this church until the 18th Century. It had previously been dedicated to Saint Andrew.
