Torstraße 4, 79650 Schopfheim
This building was used to store the tributes to the territorial lords – at first the Rötteln lords, then the margraves of Hachberg-Sausenburg, and then, from 1503, the margraves of Baden. The town owed its salt monopoly, granted in 1473, to Margrave Rudolf IV – the citizens of Schopfheim, Kleines Wiesental, Raitbach, Gersbach, Dossenbach, Hausen, and Hasel all were required to purchase their salt in Schopfheim.
The former manorial granary (herrschaftliche Kornspeicher) has served as a school building since the 19th century, for the Zeichenschule Friesenegger private art school (1830-1875), the Höhere Bürgerschule (1842-1893), a trade school (1864-1960s), a secondary school (1893-1908), and the Johann Peter Hebel special-needs school (since 1968).
This building briefly served as a prison during the Baden Revolution, when Friedrich Hecker led an uprising with the goal of converting the Grand Duchy of Baden into a liberal republic; from April 23-24 of 1848, revolutionaries captured during the battle at Dossenbach were held prisoner here on behalf of the Grand Duchy.
