General information

The water-powered smithy with its mighty hammers and mechanical-driven mechanisms once supplied weapons to the knights of Hohengeroldseck Castle.

By visiting the old smithy, you will be embarking on a journey in time. It dates back to 1280 and has been owned by the same family for the past 400 years.

Many tales are connected to the smithy. According to one, French soldiers who had torn down Hohengeroldseck Castle in 1689 made an ancestor of the current owner swear an oath to never make weapons in the smithy again. This saved the smithy from destruction and the oath was kept for almost 300 years. Only in 1970 was it finally broken when the blacksmith at that time decided to start producing original copies of medieval weapons for collectors and enthusiasts. It was the only way to save the smithy from ruin.

Guided tours take place between April and October and can be arranged by telephoning the Fehrenbach family on +49 (0)7823/2270. Duration approx. 30 minutes.
Prices: adults €5, children €3.

Our tip: Take a stroll with Grandpa Quirin and his grandchildren Kunigunde and Sigurd along the Litschental nature trail to the smithy. The information boards on the way will provide you with plenty of interesting facts about the local flora and fauna.

The Fehrenbach family looks forward to welcoming you to their restaurant– Gasthaus Schwert – next to the smithy.
