Overview

The basic form of the medieval main castle is a triangle with the longest tip pointing towards the south. The buildings of the main castle were built on to the ring wall.
The area between the ring wall and the outer enclosure wall is called the outer enclosure. Hohennagold has an upper and a lower outer enclosure. The upper enclosure around the main castle runs between the shield wall and the moat from the main gate to the northwestern tower, then further along the western ring wall just to the chalk cliffs on the south. On the eastern side of the main castle, which is situated toward the town of Nagold, there is no upper enclosure, only a lower enclosure.
The only remains of the western castle wall are near the northwestern tower. According to historical pictures, there was originally a stairway here, which led to the battlement on the wall. The stairway was made of consoles.
