Haus zur Stube

Wallstraße 1, 79650 Schopfheim

At a glance:

This building was a gift to the town from the margraves in 1442. It was used until 1583 as Schopfheim’s first Town Hall, after which it was purchased by Hans Adolf von Roggenbach. Until the start of the 19th century, the house was then the property of the baronial Roggenbach family.

Both members of the Roggenbach family who were born in this building around the time of the French Revolution would play important roles in the Grand Duchy of Baden. Constantin Freiherr von Roggenbach (1794-1876) was a high-ranking officer in the grand ducal army and a garrison commander in Mannheim and later Karlsruhe. August Freiherr von Roggenbach (1798-1854), also an officer in the grand ducal army, was tasked by the Grand Duke with reorganising the army after the 1848-49 Baden Revolution and was subsequently appointed Baden’s war minister in 1849.

In 1798, also around the time of the French Revolution, the margrave of Baden was twice a guest at the Roggenbach home. The building has housed the “Sonne” restaurant since 1856.
