General information:

South of the central market square of Heide lies the museum island of Lüttenheid in a contemplative district of the same name. Together, the Heide Museum of Local History and the Klaus-Groth Museum are the heart of Lüttenheide (Kleinheide), a self-contained unit of buildings in a bourgeois district.  The close connection between home and work bears witness to this.

In the “Old Smithy”, visitors can learn about the history of Heide’s origins. The focus is on the time of the Farmer’s Republic of Dithmarschen (ended in 1559). Many exhibits and historic finds are displayed here, such as the oldest seal of the city, the oldest tile stove of the North, which is reconstructed from tiny fragments, or a selection of old apothecary vessels and early household crockery.

Typical handmade items are displayed in the “Pferdestall” [horse barn]. Many things can be viewed, including work stations for a wheelwright, a cabinetmaker, and a shoemaker. Goldsmiths also plied their trade in Heide: The goldsmith’s workshop arranged by Ilse Köster offers an interesting view of the tools and methods of a goldsmith.

In the birth house of Klaus Groth, which was completely renovated and technically refurbished in 2016, visitors can discover how the Low German poet spent his sheltered childhood in Lüttenheid. At a modern multimedia table, visitors can follow the path of Groth’s life, which led him far beyond Heide and North Germany to becoming a celebrated writer of his time, who made Low German socially acceptable.

The museum does not see itself as a centre of documentation, but rather as a centre of research and living culture. Exhibits and diverse cultural events enrich life in Heide. Here, you can gain the ideal historical and cultural background for a visit to Heide, the Market City in the North Sea Wind.

With the combination ticket in cooperation with the nearby Brahms House, you can receive a discount on admission to both museums.
