Hauptstraße 43, 79650 Schopfheim
The building at Hauptstraße 43 was rebuilt in 1908 in the place of an older building that had originally been constructed in 1634, and thus represents a shopping spot with a very long tradition; the Ruppert shop was located here from around 1790, the Majer shop from around 1840, and the Pollag-Picard cloth shop from the second half of the 19th century until around 1940.
Several Jewish families moved to Schopfheim around 1840 – including the Pollag and Picard families from the Swiss town of Oberendingen, who founded the Pollag-Picard cloth shop. Dr. Max Picard was born in this house in 1888, and was active as a doctor, poet, and philosopher (before later passing away in Ticino). He immortalised his birthplace in the book Das alte Haus in Schopfheim (“The Old House in Schopfheim”).
