Overview

The Town Hall was erected in 1500. Market was held under the arcades and in the Market Street.

The baroque façade is certainly very different from those of the neighboring half-timbered buildings, although the Town Hall is also half-timbered. From 1756 to 1758 the façade was altered due to the classicistic influence from France. The building was also heightened a story. The Pension Chamber Master Builder of Württemberg, Johann Adam Groß the Elder, directed the project.

During the baroque period, artificial stone was more popular than natural stone. In order to save costs for native red sandstone, the arcades were covered with imitation red sandstone, which consisted of wood painted in the color of red sandstone.

Around 1700 the Town Hall was not only used for administrative purposes it was also a place where valuable goods were kept. Among them were gunpowder and lead as well as a large wagon for fire-fighting with a pump and hoses. In addition, very valuable salt was stored adjacent to the Town Hall.

In 1977/78 the Town Hall was renovated. In 1996/97 it was enlarged, restored and rebuilt.

Interesting Facts

The architect

Johann Adam Groß the Elder accompanied the laying of the foundation stone of the new Residence Palace in Stuttgart in 1746. Three years later he became the Pension Chamber Master Builder and Master Land Builder of Württemberg.

A baroque passion for building

Many palaces and country retreats were built during the reign of Duke Carl Eugen of Württemberg (1744-1793). Because the Duke needed to finance his own projects, there was no money left for Nagold’s Town Hall. Nagold was refused any financial assistance.
