Burgwallweg, 17166 Teterow
Easter until September
(times corresponding to the gastronomy)
To preserve the fauna and flora, large parts of the Teterow Lake, the Sauerwerder and the Burgwall Island were protected until the beginning of the 20th century. Teterower and guests should be kept away. In the beginning there were only a few who explored the lake and the island. Those who did not have their own boat, liked to use the ferry of the Burgwall tenant, which was made of herring buoys and a few planks. It was intended for the transport of livestock and agricultural equipment, but not for guests. An active innkeeper from Teterow ensured the supply of the guests during this time. Later, the local city fisherman bought a license for passenger transportation and took over the transfer of visitors.
In 1928 the "Schweizerhaus" (today WENDENKRUG) opened on the island. A new chain ferry started operation. It transported people and vehicles to the island. Nearly 50 years later, in 1977, the old crank ferry had served its time. It was replaced by a modern motor cable ferry. This is still in operation today. Since 2020 it has been crossing the lake in "whisper mode". Instead of the old diesel engines, the ferry is now powered by an electric motor.
