At a glance:

The building that characterises the Marktplatz was built between 1822-26 in the Weinbrenner style. Documents show that revolutionary leader Friedrich Hecker gave a speech from the balcony of the Town Hall (Rathaus) on 18 April 1848.
The revolutionary figure Gustav Struve was held prisoner here from 25-26 September 1848. This historic building is accessible during the town administration’s business hours.

A glass window designed by honorary Schopfheim citizen Professor Hans Theo Baumann can be seen in the stairwell. To the left and right of the staircase hang two works by artist Mark Roland Fuchs. In the upstairs hallway is a relief by Schopfheim artist Otto-Erich Döbele; more works by this artist can be admired at his birth house, at Hauptstraße 103.

Lenk sculpture

A large sculpture by Peter Lenk, dedicated to the Baden Revolution, was presented to the public in 2004. The artwork features Emma Herwegh, Gustav von Struve, Friedrich Hecker, “68er” activist Fritz Teufel, and modern state power in the form of Erwin Teufel.
