Entegaststraße 9, 79650 Schopfheim
Of the town’s original fortifications, constructed around the year 1250 after Schopfheim was granted town status, only this small portion remains. It served as the back wall of a farm building. The town’s walls featured two gate towers and four fortress towers.
Compulsory labour was used for excavating the town’s moat and layering up its outer wall. Not only were Schopfheim’s residents required to work on the construction, but peasants were also brought in from the surrounding area. Sandstone blocks were broken up in Entegast and perhaps Scheinberg, while boulders were collected from the riverbed.
