YOUR LOCATION: Car park “Sporgasse”

The large district town Bretten is home to more than 28000 inhabitants and known as the “Melanchtonstadt” (city of Melanchton). Properly named first in the year 767 the city got itself a name as the city of towers. Betha Benz stopped here on her return from Pforzheim to Mannheim and “refueled” at the “Marktapotheke” (pharmacy at the market), which is located at the market square. (Station 2 Bertha Benz, just follow the signposting towards the market square.)

Experience Bretten

Numerous festivities and events are held and attract visitors from far and wide to Bretten. The Peter and Paul festivities for example, take the city back to the year 1504 so participants, inhabitants and visitors can enjoy the history of the city. Other widely known festivities include the wine market at the end of September as well as the countless other markets that take place all over the calendar year. Especially all around the market square Bretten offers an all year long interesting and ever changing program with a diverse gastronomy.

  • The “Brettner Hundle”
The “Brettner Hundle” (dog of Bretten) is the most famous pet of the city. According to its tale it saved the inhabitants in 1504 from the württembergischen besiegers commanded by duke Ulrich. During the siege the dog got fed with the food leftovers of the city and sent in front of the cities gates. The well fed dog conveyed the impression that the cities food resources were so extensive that the besiegers left off the siege.
  • The historic city tour is highly recommendable with the brochure available at the tourist information at the market square.
  • The modern, public bath in Bretten (Bäderwelt Bretten) offers not only plenty of swimming fun but as well a modern and relaxing sauna.
