Historic Old Town Tiengen

Welcome to Historic Old Town Tiengen

The first indirect mention of Waldshut was found in a conciliation document issued in 1256 at St. Blasien Abbey, in which an "Arnoldo scultheto in Waldishuote" was listed. The town's first seal from 1277, bearing the inscription "Sigillum civium in Waldishut," depicted a forest ranger, known as the "Waldshuter Männle," which was supplemented after 1468 by an honorary coat of arms featuring the Habsburg lion. Tiengen was first mentioned in 858. The present-day twin town has only been a district capital since 1975. During the County of Hauenstein, the town of Waldshut was the seat of the "Waldvogt" (forest bailiff), who ruled over the region "auf dem Wald" (Hotzenwald) and the "Waldstädte" (Laufenburg, Rheinfelden, Säckingen, and Waldshut). Today, the Waldvogt of that time is (roughly) equivalent to the district administrator.
