Near Wismar, the island of Poel in the Baltic Sea is connected to the mainland by a causeway. Poel's 37 square kilometres are home to beaches, lakes and idyllic pastureland. One of the best-known towns is Timmendorf with its beach of the same name. In addition to Poel's two lighthouses, its 13th century brick church is visible from afar.
