The International Nature Park Moor on the border with the Netherlands was used for peat extraction for a long time. Today, the area is a nature reserve. Over 280 bird species as well as rare amphibians and reptiles are native to the area. The Emsland Moor Museum tells the story of human settlement, while visitors to the Veenpark can visit 19th century colonists' houses.
