Karlsruher Grat Ottenhöfen

Welcome to Karlsruher Grat Ottenhöfen

The only alpine peak in our Black Forest region, offering magnificent viewpoints. It’s rare to experience an alpine atmosphere in the Black Forest. This tranquil low mountain range generally captivates visitors with its gentle meadows, forests, and hills. But there are places here as well where sturdy footwear, sure-footedness, and a head for heights are essential. One of the most beautiful areas of this kind is the Karlsruher Grat near Ottenhöfen, which can certainly hold its own against high-mountain via ferratas and gains even more appeal as a destination thanks to its connection to the wild and romantic [Edelfrauengrab Waterfalls](http://www.ottenhoefen-tourismus.de/106-0-Edelfrauengrab-Wasserfaelle.html) in the nearby Gottschläg Valley, it gains even more appeal as an excursion destination. **Interesting Facts About the “Karlsruher Grat”** Geologically speaking, the Karlsruher Grat—whose local name is “Eichhaldenfirst”—is a quartz porphyry ridge that formed during the Paleozoic era, around 270 million years ago, when magma penetrated a four-kilometer-long and approximately 750-meter-deep fissure in the rock and solidified. Through erosion of the surrounding rock, the more resistant, harder porphyry was exposed as a striking ridge. In some places, the flow marks on the ridge can still be seen today. Of course, one hardly thinks about that once you’re up there: for here, the view of the deep Gottschlag Valley and the Black Forest peaks between Hornisgrinde and Schliffkopf is simply overwhelming. And then, of course, the terrain itself presents certain challenges. However, one should always bear in mind that the Karlsruher Grat, together with the Gottschlägtal, has formed a 154-hectare nature reserve since 1975, extending from an altitude of approximately 400 m to 850 m above sea level. In particular, the treeless rocky areas and the dry scree slopes represent valuable biotopes that provide a habitat for many endangered plants. The name “Karlsruher Grat” likely stems from the fact that, around 100 years ago, the Eichhaldenfirst was a popular destination for hiking clubs from Karlsruhe, then the capital of the state of Baden. In the area of the Karlsruher Grat and the Gottschlägal, spruce, fir, Douglas fir, and deciduous trees thrive due to the soil’s rich mineral content and the cool, humid climate. Ferns and mosses grow near the Edelfrauengrab waterfalls. There is little vegetation on the ridge itself; many of the rocks are covered in lichen. On the steep slopes, beech, oak, and chestnut trees dominate the sparse vegetation. Above an altitude of about 800 m, broom, moor grass, and heather are found. Starting in spring, the Karlsruher Grat is bathed in yellow by the rare broom and broom bushes. It is also bathed in the white blossoms of serviceberry, mountain ash, and rowan. Splashes of color persist well into the summer: knapweed, yarrow, bellflower, summer snowflake, and, in spring locations, marsh marigold, yellow loosestrife, and marsh violet. A wide variety of insects are drawn to the sunny southern slopes of this unique nature reserve: steppe grasshoppers and, above all, butterflies. With a bit of luck, peregrine falcons and ravens can be spotted above the Gottschlag Valley or the steep cliffs.
