Welcome to St. Cyriak - Sulzburg
Since its restoration between 1955 and 1964, the former Sulzburg monastery church has been one of the rediscovered gems of the Markgräflerland region. The former monastery church is an important example of Ottonian sacred art in Germany. It is dedicated to the martyr Saint Cyriacus. The church was first mentioned in 993. A document from 1008 mentions a monastery with Benedictine nuns. The small church tower was built in the 11th century and is considered the oldest preserved church tower in southwestern Germany. According to the latest research, the wooden parts come from a tree that was felled in the winter of 996.
The subdued light, the Romanesque-style round arches, the simple pillars, the vestibule dating from 1309, the wooden ceiling dating from 1510, the restrained ornamental painting and remnants of old frescoes – all this conveys the impression of a time standing still and appeals in an unusual way.
In February 2009, St. Cyriak was placed under special monument protection by the Freiburg Regional Council and entered in the monument register as a cultural monument of special significance. In the same year, St. Cyriak was elevated to the highest category of national monuments worthy of protection in Germany.
In addition to church services, concerts are also held here, which are regarded as musical events far beyond Sulzburg.
