Visible from afar, the former Benedictine monastery of Lorch lies on a hill above the Remstal valley. It was founded in 1102 by the Staufers as a family burial place. The monastery's heyday was in the late Middle Ages. Today, visitors can still view the charming complex with its church, cloister, farm buildings, and monastery garden. The chapter house contains the Staufer panorama, which vividly recounts the history of the Staufers over a length of 30 meters and a height of 4.5 meters. Queen Irene of Byzantium, a daughter-in-law of Barbarossa, is the most famous Staufer, who was buried here over 800 years ago. The Benedictine monastery flourished in the late Middle Ages.
