A natural phenomenon unique in the world is the Danube’s subsidence in the Donaubergland region: The Danube flows into two oceans. There are several subsidence points here. A large portion of the Danube’s water disappears into the ground at various locations. The first major sinkhole of the Danube in the Danube Sinkage area is located in Immendingen in the Donaubergland region, directly at the weir near the covered wooden bridge and close to the so-called Donauuferpark II. At this first major sinkhole, individual large sinkholes can be seen depending on the water level. At times, up to 8 square meters of Danube water per second disappears into the ground right here in the Danube’s riverbed. Something truly extraordinary is happening in the Donaubergland—something unique in the world: Between Immendingen and Fridingen, the Danube splits. Part of the Danube’s water seeps into the ground, while the other part mostly continues to flow0. This means that the Danube flows into two seas—the Black Sea and, at the same time, the North Sea! During the summer months, it is often completely gone. HAt most, some Danube water still passes the Danube seepage site at certain water levels through the two diversion tunnels near Immendingen and Fridingen. Sometimes, however, nothing flows through at all.
