A unique natural phenomenon - the Danube seepage: a river suddenly flows into two oceans, above ground into the Black Sea and underground to Lake Constance and from there into the Rhine in the North Sea.
Cologne is on the Danube and Vienna is on the Krähenbach?
We all learned at school: "The Danube flows into the Black Sea" - but this does not apply to the entire Danube. Between Immendingen and Tuttlingen, a large proportion of the Danube's water sinks and seeps away. And here in the "Im Brühl" district, there are several swallow holes in the riverbed.
A lot of water flows underground to the source of the Aach in Hegau. From there it flows back to the surface in the Radolfzeller Aach to Lake Constance, from where it continues its long journey. The Danube water thus reaches the North Sea together with the water of the Rhine.
If you like, Cologne, Bonn, Düsseldorf and many other cities are also on the Danube!
In summer, the riverbed is dry for weeks on end. You can hike through the Danube without getting your feet wet on the Donauversinkung premium trail.
But doesn't that also mean that Vienna is not on the Danube in summer, but perhaps on the Krähenbach, the nearest tributary of the Danube near Möhringen?

Where can you clearly see and understand the Danube infiltration?
Along the main sinking point near Immendingen, there are large sinkholes and swallow holes on the embankment where the Danube water sinks in whirlpools. Here you can observe how the water disappears into the ground.
