Welcome to Stieglesfelsen

The Stiegelesfels is a large, impressive rock formation approximately 200 m high above the Danube. Together with the Laibfelsen and the Burgstall, it is one of the largest rock formations in the valley. The Stiegelesfels rock formation is part of the "Stiegelesfels Oberes Donautal" nature reserve. The Stiegelesfels was placed under protection as early as the 1930s, initially covering an area of approximately 28 hectares. In 2004, the area was expanded to approximately 348 hectares. The protected area is home to unique flora and fauna, not only for the region but even for Europe as a whole. Around 50 different plant communities occur here, more than any other known area of the same size. Of the plant species found here, over 100 are on the Red List. The majority of protected plant species colonize rocks, scree slopes, and other natural forest-free locations. Among the animal species, the most impressive are the rock-dwelling bird species such as eagle owls, peregrine falcons, and ravens. Rare butterfly and grasshopper species are less conspicuous, and bats, which find shelter and well-tempered hiding places in numerous caves, are rarely seen.
