Welcome to Merzig Animal and Ark Park

The Merzig Animal and Ark Park is home to endangered farm animal breeds such as Thuringian Forest goats, Hinterwälder cattle, German Karakul sheep, and Meißner rams. South American coatis, alpacas, honey bees, budgerigars, and cockatiels also live in the enclosures at Blättelbornweiher. **Initiated in 1962 by the then mayor Gerd Caspar in the city park area and relocated a few years later to its current location next to the Blättelbornweiher pond, the Merzig Animal and Ark Park has developed into one of the most popular excursion and recreational destinations in the district town of Merzig in recent years and decades.** **In 2016, it was decided to move away from keeping wild animals as far as possible and to gradually switch to endangered farm animal breeds. The aim is also to create a place where children can experience agriculture and farm animal husbandry with all their senses, as the park is increasingly being used as a place of learning by school classes and kindergartens. It was also important to those responsible to meet the requirements for modern animal husbandry conditions. Since the presentation of the certificate by the Society for the Preservation of Old and Endangered Domestic Animal Breeds (Gesellschaft zur Erhaltung alter und gefährdeter Haustierrassen e.V.) in 2019, the animal park has been allowed to call itself "Archepark" (Ark Park) and thus has a unique selling point in the Saar-Lor-Lux region.
