Brenz Church

Paul-Reusch-Straße 1, 71263 Weil der Stadt

Built between 1888 and 1889 under the direction of Stuttgart professor Robert von Reinhardt in the neo-Gothic style, the Brenzkirche has been a largely faithful example of historicist church architecture since its last renovation in the 1970s.

The church is named after the important reformer Johannes Brenz, who was born in Weil der Stadt in 1499. His birthplace is well preserved and can still be viewed from the outside today. Johannes Brenz was an early follower of Martin Luther and was instrumental in the introduction of the Reformation in Schwäbisch Hall. Later, Duke Christoph von Württemberg appointed him to Stuttgart and commissioned him to reorganize the church system, which led to the Great Church Order of 1559. He shaped the structure of the regional church and championed the education of boys and girls. The catechism he created is still in use today. Johannes Brenz died in 1570 and his epitaph can be found in Stuttgart's collegiate church.

A bust in the Brenz Church commemorates the influential reformer.
